I Will Sing (Cantare') 4-part (SATB)

The text in this composition is a setting of Psalm 89, in both Spanish and English. The motto of ACP Publications is "Gratiam Dei in aeternum cantabo," literally, "The grace of God in eternity I will sing." This is a paraphrase of the first verse of Psalm 89, here, "Cantare alabanzas al Senor."

The word "hesed" in Hebrew is variously translated as "grace," "kindness," "mercy," "loving-kindness," "compassion," and other words. The original, single, Hebrew word includes all these meanings. Like many other words in the Old Testament, the exact meaning in English can only be determined or estimated from the given context. In many cases, the actual meaning is ambiguous, often deliberately so.

As a musical entity, this composition for four-part choir would appropriately be sung anytime during the liturgical year. During the Eucharist, this setting could be effective as an opening song, a sequence (after the second reading), during the preparation of gifts, as a second Communion song, or as closing song. Cantare would be appropriate at celebrations of thanksgiving, anniversaries, or major festivals.
